Beans
Our first season of beans has now been harvested! Check back here this winter to learn how you can get your hands on some.
A Seed Legacy
We started running bean trials in 2022, and decided in 2025 that we were ready to scale up. Around that time, we had the good fortune to meet Rebecca Jehn (Rebecca’s Garden), a local veteran seed producer, who was getting ready to retire. Through the fantastic FarmFolk CityFolk Seed Mentorship Program, we were formally partnered for the 2025 growing season.
Now, we are delighted to be able to bring forward those bean varieties that Rebecca has been stewarding for decades: a collection that are particularly suited to drying for winter storage.
Among the 34 varieties we are growing, there’s a bean to suit every taste: from spicy chili to creamy hummus, hearty black bean tacos to refreshing bean salads. In addition to being packed with protein, fibre, and essential nutrients, beans are deliciously versatile.
As we build up our seed stock, we’re offering small quantities of seed for sale in 2026, intended for planting. These beans are fully edible, but we sell them in seed quantities—ideal for gardeners, growers, and seed savers.
Because we grow on a small farm, we maintain careful isolation spacing between varieties to help preserve genetic integrity. While complete separation isn’t always possible, we take steps to minimize cross-pollination, including staggered planting, buffer crops, and dedicated plots for certain varieties.
Our goal is to preserve and share diverse bean genetics, supporting a more resilient and vibrant seed system—one handful of beans at a time.
In future years, we plan to grow out selected varieties in greater volume, so check back to see which beans will be available. Or, drop us a note to let us know which varieties you’d be most interested in purchasing.
